In testing · Lubumbashi

Food delivery, built for Lubumbashi.

DeliVite is one app for customers, restaurants, riders and operations, made for the DR Congo: French first, prices in Congolese francs, cash on delivery, and screens that keep working on a weak connection. In testing on iPhone ahead of launch.

01 The app

One app, five roles.

One app serves every role in a delivery: the customer who orders, the restaurant that cooks, the rider who carries it, and the operations and support team behind them.

R—01

Customer

Order now or for later

Browse without an account and sign in to order. Dishes can come in sizes and with extras, vegetarian and allergen filters narrow the menu, and an order can be placed now or for later, today or tomorrow, with an arrival estimate.

  • Dish search on the phone itself
  • Favourites and order again
  • Push notifications and a lock-screen bar
  • Receipts, and problems reported within 24 h
  • Support by phone or a WhatsApp link

R—02

Restaurant

A dock on the counter

Orders arrive on the dock, a phone or a counter tablet, with a chime. Opening hours open and close the restaurant automatically, and the restaurant sets busy mode and its preparation time.

  • Menu editor in French and English
  • AirPrint kitchen tickets
  • Manager, cook and tablet roles
  • Can propose dropping a dish from an order
  • Handover confirmed with the rider's code
  • Daily figures, a 07:00 summary and CSV exports

R—03

Rider

Approved by operations

Riders apply in the app with an ID, a driving licence and a number plate, and operations approve them. A rider claims orders, and while carrying one, the rider's position is followed even with the phone locked.

  • Map directions
  • Exact drop-off only from handover to delivery
  • Emergency button
  • Earnings and cash owed

R—04

Operations

Behind an authenticator-app code

Operations work from a live map. They assign or remove riders, and approve the riders who apply.

  • Refunds as credit or to the original method
  • Account suspensions
  • Reports
  • Zones, fees and rainy-season mode
See the city controls →

R—05

Support

Fewer rights than operations

Customers reach support by phone or through a WhatsApp link in the app. Support works in the same app as operations, with fewer rights.

  • Refunds capped at $10 per order
  • Behind an authenticator-app code

02 How it works

Two codes between the kitchen and the door.

An order passes from the customer to the restaurant, then to a rider, then to the customer's door. Each handover uses a four-digit code, and every change to the order goes through a database function.

FIG.02 One order, two handovers
CUSTOMER RESTAURANT RIDER DATABASE Order · cash Delivery code Dock · accept Rider's code Claim En route Order functions Row-level security Push
  1. 01

    Order

The customer orders, now or for later, and says which note they will pay with.

  2. 02

    Dock

The restaurant's dock chimes and the restaurant accepts. An order left unanswered is cancelled after 10 minutes.

  3. 03

    Claim

A rider claims the order, or operations assign one.

  4. 04

    Rider's code

At the counter, the restaurant types the rider's code and the order changes hands.

  5. 05

    En route

The customer follows the rider on a map, refreshed every 5 s while the rider carries only that order.

  6. 06

    Delivery code

At the door, the customer's code completes the delivery and the rider collects the cash.

Codes
Four digits each: the rider's at the counter, typed by the restaurant, and the customer's at the door. Five wrong tries lock the step.
Push
The customer is told when the order is accepted, when it is on its way, when the rider is within 500 m, and when it is delivered or cancelled. An order bar follows it on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, and operations are alerted when notifications fail.
Database
All 34 tables are under row-level security, and orders change only through database functions. The back end runs in Frankfurt, with no custom server.

03 Privacy & security

The restaurant never sees where the customer is.

There are no ads and no tracking in DeliVite, and no data is sold. The rows below say who sees a customer's details, and for how long.

PR-01

Sign-in

A phone number and a password. Operations and support also need a code from an authenticator app.

PR-02

Password changes

Every password change is recorded, with who made it.

PR-03

Row-level security

On all 34 tables. Orders change only through database functions.

PR-04

The restaurant

Never sees where the customer is.

PR-05

The rider

Sees the exact place, the customer's name and phone number only from handover to delivery.

PR-06

Drop-offs

Erased 30 days after the order, except each customer's latest.

PR-07

Handover codes

Four digits. Five wrong tries lock the step.

PR-08

Your account

A customer can delete their account in the app.

04 Built for the city

Weak signal, cash, and the rainy season.

What the app does when the connection is weak, how paying in cash works, and what operations can set for the city.

C—01

Weak connections

When the connection is weak

Problem
Mobile data can drop in the middle of an order.
How it behaves
A request gives up after 30 seconds instead of hanging. Data already on screen stays there, and images are small, cached and loaded only when they are needed.
What you see
Data marked with the time it was last refreshed, and an offline screen when the phone is offline.
  • 30 s timeout
  • Kept on screen
  • Offline screen

C—02

Cash and change

Cash, with the change on its way

Problem
A rider who arrives without change for a large note turns a delivery into a wait.
How it behaves
Customers pay cash on delivery. At checkout the customer says which note they will pay with, so the rider brings the change.
What you see
Prices in Congolese francs, and for each rider, earnings and the cash owed.
  • Cash on delivery
  • Congolese francs
  • Change brought

C—03

Operations

Zones, fees and the rainy season

Problem
Delivery areas, fees and the exchange rate do not stay fixed, and neither does the weather.
How it behaves
Operations draw the delivery zones on a map, set the fees, the exchange rate and the minimum order, and can switch on rainy-season mode.
What you see
Alerts for stuck orders and for notifications that fail, and unanswered orders cancelled after 10 minutes.
  • Zones on a map
  • Rainy-season mode
  • Stuck-order alerts

05 Questions

Answered before you ask.

When does it launch?

There is no launch date yet. DeliVite is in testing on iPhone and iPad through TestFlight, Apple's service for testing apps before release. It will launch in Lubumbashi, with food delivery first.

How do customers pay?

Customers pay cash on delivery. At checkout the customer says which note they will pay with, so the rider brings change. Prices are shown in Congolese francs.

Which languages?

French, which is the default, and English. Restaurants can write their menus in both.

How is my address protected?

The restaurant never sees where you are. The rider sees the exact place, your name and your phone number only from handover to delivery. The drop-off is erased 30 days after the order, unless it is your latest, and there are no ads, no tracking and no data sold.

What does a restaurant need?

An iPhone, or an iPad on the counter, to run the dock, which chimes when an order comes in. Kitchen tickets print over AirPrint. The menu is written in the app, in French and English, and opening hours open and close the restaurant automatically. Tell us about your restaurant with the form below.

Is it on Android?

Not yet; iPhone first. The test version runs on iPhone and iPad.
